21 sits, 10,000 miles, 2 years ➡️ 177-inch KS buck!
|
Took a minute but Realtree pro Eric Hale finally stuck a huge buck he’d been after for 2 years:
> As a younger deer, the buck had briefly passed through the property. It returned in 2019, and it had gotten big. It moved onto the farm after a neighboring hunter removed another giant from the area.
> The stud reappeared in Sept 2020, easily distinguishable by its heavy rack and dark brown forehead. Hale pushed all his chips to the middle of the table. With plenty of trailcam data…he knew where and how to tag the giant.
He and a bud had several close calls, including this one:
> “The first does were coming into estrus, and he literally broke from what he lived by and it almost got him killed. I had him at 27 yards, and Jason called me off of him because of bad footage. That was a tough pill to swallow.”
Whoa I bet! Then came Nov 28:
> Two nice 4-year-old bucks, a young 8-pointer, and a great up-and-coming deer they call “Swoop” all cruised by. An hour or so later, another nice 10-pointer pushed several does past him. Then, chaos.
> The huge buck…barreled out of cover, hot on the heels of several does and yet another small buck. The group ran right under the treestand and continued the chase for several action-packed seconds.
> Finally, Eric stopped the buck 35 yards away, standing between two cedar trees. He took the 35-yard, quartering-away shot opportunity. The arrow struck, and the buck dashed out of sight.
> “I sat on the ground, thanked God, and began calling people. Then, I sat there, leaned up against a giant cedar rub of his, and reflected on the chase. Any time spent in the woods with God, family, and your hunting buddies is time you cherish.”
The 10K miles part is driving 1,100 miles 1 way from VA to KS! Amazing dedication and time to get that deer, congrats Eric! 👊 What a beautiful-looking deer that is…. |

Check out this stud buck from across the border!
|
> Big shout out to @wyatt.barry3 on his 183 3/8″ southern ON giant. Wyatt was able to keep his composure as the Buck worked a scrape line right to him, giving him a 25-yard shot this past Nov. |

LEGIT first buck for AL 7-yr-old!
|
Big congrats to Roberts G., who took this rad AL buck as his first-ever deer with his dad AND won the local big buck photo contest: 😎
> As the hunt unfolded, a big-bodied buck entered the back of the food plot about 30 minutes before sunset and began slowly making his way to within 100 yards. As the deer got within range, [his dad] helped the youngster overcome his buck fever and squeeze off a quality shot.
> “What a special moment for both of us and what a first deer. Our family is blessed with many memories afield and we take pride in our conservation and management practices to ensure a healthy deer population and quality experiences with family and friends.”
The buck was 220 lbs and 11 points! Must be some food plot because Roberts’ twin brother Spears shot his 1st deer the following week, a 200-lb 9-point! |

Now that’s some kinda 6-point!
|
Insane width on that 6-pointer! Taken by @gtyoung08, shared by @whitetaildepartment. Deer looks pretty old too.

For context ➡️ good governor in that state:
> “The goal of this legislation is to get more young people involved in our outdoor way of life at an early age so they continue those experiences long into their adulthood.”
> …will allow resident and nonresident youth to fish without a license, allow nonresident youth age 15 and under to participate in the mentored hunting program….
And this article said:
> “We [GFP] see and we hear stories where individuals don’t even participate because they just can’t figure out how [licensing] works.”
2. WI long-term trend of fewer deer hunters??
3. WY wants feds to return lands to state control.
Would exclude national parks and monuments, military bases, and Native American land:
> In WY the federal government controls over 46% of the state’s total land area….
> UT passed a similar law in 2012, however has been unable to enforce it. …the federal government still has control of 60% of UT’s land….
4. DC: House trying for public land expansion.
Can’t link it, at backcountryhunters.org:
> Would designate about 1.49 mil acres of public land as wilderness, incorporate more than 1,000 river miles as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and ensure that wildlife habitat across approximately 1.3 mil acres of public land will remain permanently intact.
5. MA raising hunting/fishing fees substantially.
> …the cost of the necessary licenses and permits to hunt bear, turkey, pheasant, waterfowl, small game and deer (including archery and muzzleloader seasons) would climb from $47.70 to $160. Non-resident license and permit fees are also slated to go up.
6. MN says 61% of deer sampled had traces of pesticide.
800 deer sampled, stuff found in spleens so apparently no danger in eating the venison?
> Neonicotinoids, neonics for short, are found in more than 500 commercial and domestic products, used from crop to residential applications, including pets.
7. B&C host its 1st-ever online auction.
Proceeds will fund B&C and its efforts:
> Bidding opens Mar 7 at 7:00 am EST and bids will be accepted until 7:00 pm EDT on Mar 21 (for firearms) and 7:00 pm EDT on Mar 28 (for everything else).
8. Marc Jardell new Sr Ops Mgr of Primary Arms optics.
9. CO man banned from hunting in 48 states.
Article states he pled guilty to poaching 15 animals (including 12 deer and 1 bighorn) in 3 CO counties. Also got jail and a fine.
Not clear how a DNR hearing examiner could cancel his hunting in 47 other states or for that matter why it’s not all 50.
10. FL: Environmental groups want more protection for Key deer.
11. CO planning wolf reintroduction.
12. ID is going to remove limits on mountain lion hunting?

Eyes On
Just some stuff to keep track of:
1. Liberal news platform calls for “end to trophy hunting.”
Mostly seems to be about Africa, but also quotes B&C and claims only the “elite” still want to kill animals. 🙄
2. Another environmental group called “conservationists.”
Remember last week we pointed out WI media called an animal rights group “conservationists”? Same thing happened in CA, but a different group: the lawsuit-happy Center for Biological Diversity. Wonder why they are starting to try to redefine that term…🤔 – we can’t let ’em!
3. PA rez says killing coyotes is good and fine, just not for prizes.
4. MN: Knives included in proposed weapons-rights amendment…
…to state constitution.
5. 2A stuff

Deer Disease News
1. FL updates carcass-import CWD rules.
> Prohibit importing or possessing whole carcasses or high-risk parts of deer, elk, moose, caribou and all other species of the deer family originating from any place outside of FL.
2. IN still hasn’t found any CWD.
893 deer tested this season.
3. TX: CWD found in panhandle county muley.
4. MT: 17% of deer on a management hunt were CWD-poz.
5. CO: No CWD found in deer this season.
Also, CO now requires some elk to be tested for CWD.

.454 Casull ain’t enough for ya? Have a try at the new Taurus Raging Hunter in .460 S&W = serious oomph. Alloutdoor.com with some deets:
> “The Raging Hunter was a hit among veteran and new handgun hunters when we introduced it in 2019. We are now answering the consumer demand for even more chamber options and downrange performance with the new Raging Hunter in .460 S&W.”
> Sleeved barrel construction for reduced weight, factory-tuned porting, and a gas-expansion chamber to help reduce muzzle rise.
> An integrated, full-length Picatinny rail along the barrel shroud makes optic installation easy. For those hunters who prefer open sights, the rear sight is fully adjustable for elevation and windage.
> To help manage recoil and ensure positive, no-slip retention, the Raging Hunter comes with an ergonomic finger-groove grip with cushioned inserts.
Set ya back just under $1K. Guaranteed to turn heads (and burst ears?) at the range. 😁 |

Tip of the Week
|
Down south (or early season in the north), hunting can for sure be hot – so dang hot you’re sweaty and stinky by the time you get to your stand. But Buckmasters sez there’s simple things you can do to change that:
> Carry your outer clothing in a roll-top stuff sack. While you might need that heavy coat and bibs to remain comfortable in your stand, you don’t need (or want) to wear them during your walk.
> You can simply strap your clothing to the bottom of a backpack, but doing so exposes the fabric to snags (including barbed-wire fences) and hitchhiker weeds.
> Another benefit of carrying your clothing in a roll-top sack is you can easily hoist the bag on your pull-up rope to an elevated stand.
> Because of the compression qualities of roll-tops, you can squeeze a winter coat and pants/bibs into a 30L sack, although a 40L would be best for really thick clothing. |

Quote of the Week

“We’ve been sent a lot of photos and there are a lot of folks who are upset these deer were taken.”
– WV DNR officer talkin’ about 2 nice deer allegedly poached by a non-resident. Here they are – sounds like more than a few residents were hoping to cross paths with these bucks: |
Hate seeing that….
