It’s official: KS Butcher Buck is the #2 P&Y non-typ! 🏆
|
|
Huge congrats to Brian Butcher – his monster deer officially measured 343 4/8 gross, 321 3/8 net!! 🤯 Deets from Bowhunter:
> …would also become the 2nd-largest hunter-harvested buck in the B&C book, falling only behind Luke Brewster’s huge bowkill….
> And it would also check in at #4 all-time in the B&C record book, which is anchored by the 333 7/8″ world record Missouri Monarch and the 328 2/8″ Hole in the Horn Buck from OH.
> “We were on a nearly 2-year long journey [to get it scored] since I shot the deer and to find out that it’s as high as it is, I’m just blessed and lucky.”

Yards and yards of KS velvet!

Where did all the fawns go? Yotes??

OL says that since 2000 almost every state has seen a major decline in fawn recruitment rates? Pretty alarming, sounds like multiple factors:
> Fawn recruitment rates have declined in lockstep with the rise of coyote populations. But other factors are in play too….
> Some literature…stated that predation is more likely a mask for the ultimate cause of mortality…it’s important to remember that predation is a property-specific issue.
> Urban sprawl and agricultural practices continue to disperse whitetail populations, or at the very least alter a deer’s home range. Today, our landscapes are much more fragmented, which benefits predators.
> There’s a low rumbling by some biologists that a select set of agricultural products, best known as neonicotinoids, are causing fawn die-offs.
Neonicotinoids are the same things thought to be killing bees….

Sick-lookin’ skull art on a huuuuge whitetail! This guy can carve bone or antler into just about anything you want. Bonetats is a pretty cool idea.

Ever see one of these around a feeder??

> For all of my hunting buddies that thought I was smoking crack when I said I saw a monkey from my stand in south Texas. Here you go….
🤯

> The sale of general hunting license…increased by 15% in 2020, while the sale of combination hunting and fishing licenses were up by 50% from 2019.
Named after an early 20th-century Native American bowhunter. Congrats!

> Lifting its border closure to vaccinated Americans on Aug 9 and other vaccinated international travelers on Sept 7.
It’ll now tolerate x-bows, and wants to be less clubby. Says it will focus on preserving, promoting and protecting bowhunting.
Supposedly to improve wildlife habitat and reduce threats of catastrophic wildfires.

Deer Disease News
> The restriction would be in place for 1 year and only apply to activities on National Forest System lands.
> The proposal is to allow (1) an early Sept antlerless-only firearms deer season and a late (Jan through Mar) antlerless-only firearms deer season in designated disease focus zones in Floyd, Montgomery and Pulaski counties, and (2) extend the general firearms season on non-national forest lands in Montgomery and Pulaski counties from 2 to 4 weeks.
Reports scattered among 3 counties: Napa, Kern, and Nevada.
NDA wants more to happen….

> Made out of heavy-duty roto-molded plastic that will not rust, Capsule Feeders sit-and-fill design allows outdoor enthusiasts of any age to fill and operate the feeder.

Sounds somewhat like Google Earth?
> This new layer not only allows users to view the best images over the previous month, but also allows them to go back in time, month by month, for several years, so that changes and trends can be seen.

> 4mm Axis uses a lighter weight carbon for more speed to the target in order to drive broadheads deeper upon impact.
|
|
> Offers better durability, improved functionality, and a more refined aesthetic.

> CenterPoint Pulse 425 ($499). Checking in at only 12″ in width from axle to axle when cocked, this crossbow is a quiet assassin that can be easily maneuvered in a treestand, ladder stand or ground blind….
> CenterPoint Wrath 430 ($649). Measuring only 9″ axle to axle when cocked – and only 13″ when not cocked – this crossbow is 28 1/4″ long, weighs 8.3 lbs and lets bolts go at 430 fps.
> PSE Coalition Frontier ($299). Starting with a 13 1/4″ power stroke, the Coalition Frontier can launch bolts at speeds of up to 380 fps as the 190-lb draw weight delivers a good kinetic energy punch downrange.
> Rocky Mountain RM400 Black ($299). Propels a 380-grain Carbon Express Pile Driver bolt – included in the package – at 400 fps with 135 ft-lbs of kinetic energy at impact.
> Wicked Ridge Blackhawk 360 ($399). Weighing only 6 lbs and measuring 35″ long by 15″ wide, the crossbow sends bolts downrange at 360 fps thanks to the WRX laminated limbs, machined 5S Cams, and DynaFLIGHT 97 string and cables.

> One of my favorite places to hang trail cameras on public land is at the head of a steep drainage ditch that runs up the side of a ridge — particularly when that ridge has good, thick cover on top.
> When I find an area that really looks good to me, but without any type of funnel or pinch-point nearby, I like to incorporate a mock scrape to get deer in front of my trail camera.
> it’s as easy as finding a low-hanging branch, clearing out the leaves underneath and peeing in your new scrape — no expensive bottled deer urine necessary!
> Break out your onX Hunt app, turn on topo mode and find some of the primary creeks on the public land you are hunting. You can then put boots on the ground and start walking these creeks looking for obvious signs of where the deer cross. Unless you are hunting an area with an extremely low deer density, good creek crossings shouldn’t be too hard to find.
> I try to keep my cameras in places off the beaten path…I carry a climbing stick with me so I can place them in trees 10-12′ off the ground. This keeps them out of the line of sight of most people passing by….

“This is the radical animal-rights movement’s dream that criminalizes any killing, or even use, of an animal spelled out in black-and-white law. Killing a cockroach or mouse could get you a felony and 5 years in prison.”
– Brian Lynn, Sportsmen’s Alliance VP, talkin’ about OR’s nutjob Initiative Petition 13, which would prohibit the killing of any animal, domestic or wild, except in self defense. Breeding or even handling animals would be outlawed. Say what??
