Look at this monster Saskatchewan buck!! 🤯
|
|
> Josh decided to hunt for the buck in 2018…. “I took a vacation during the prime rut, and I hunted hard that week but never saw the buck. On Saturday I decided to attend a hockey game, and that decision cost me the deer. Once I had a chance to look at the trail camera pictures, I found the buck was in front of my camera at 11:02 am.”
> Going into the 2019 season, Josh decided he would hunt the drop-tine buck or nothing at all. However, despite using all his vacation time, hunting dark to dark for too many days and using all the tricks in his bag, it wasn’t meant to be.
> He thought the buck had disappeared without a trace and it was time to move on. After an uneventful 2019 season, Josh was ready to make up for it during the 2020 season. But after countless hours of scouting and field watches, things didn’t look real promising. “I couldn’t find a mature buck for the life of me, so I decided on a whim that I would set up a camera in a different area about 1.5 miles from where I had been hunting,”
> A couple of weeks later…he didn’t flip through too many photos on the card before an image made him catch his breath…. It was the drop-tine buck! …he was even bigger than Josh had ever imagined!
> 2 days before the season opened, Josh went in and placed his ground blind. …Josh hunted dark to dark every day except for one when the wind was wrong. However, it wasn’t until 4:30 pm on Nov 20 when the buck walked in.
> “There was a lot of deer activity. I had a doe close to my blind, and about the time she walked away another doe walked in and replaced her. Finally, that doe walked away, and right after she left, I could hear antlers coming through the willows.”
> When the buck cleared the shooting lane 40 yards in front of the ground blind, Josh already had his gun shouldered…Josh simultaneously heard and felt the gun’s response. The buck took 3 leaps and expired.
A 3-year hunt! Worth it no doubt, here’s what that big dude scored:
> Although the antlers appear to have a 5×5 typical frame, the measurers pulling the tape considered what appears as a right side G3 point to originate from the base of the G2, thus causing the long point to be tossed into the abnormal category. That also means the typical frame tapes out at 172 4/8″ as a 4×4.
> Add in the 45 7/8″ of abnormal points, and the total gross score climbs to 218 3/8″.
🤯🤯 Congrats wow!

Typ velvet muley is the new world record – after a 10-year wait! 👀
|
|
> On Saturday, May 14 P&Y convened a special panel of Judges in Ogden, UT for a potential World’s Record Typical Velvet Mule Deer. Bowdy Gardner’s typical velvet mule deer scored an incredible 218 2/8″ and is now the largest bow-harvested typical velvet mule deer in North America.
> This amazing deer…is now recognized as the new world’s record after the original score was upheld by a panel of measurers.
|
|
Not sure why it would take that long? The deer was shot by Bowdy on public land (Paunsaugunt, UT) in 2012, and after the 60-day drying period grossed 223″ and 218 2/8″ net. Had over 30″ beams and 21″ G2s! Deets from the Color Country Outfitters FB page.

Here’s the biggest deer headlines of the week.
|
|
Couple we thought deserved being highlighted:
|
|
> …that time reaches a balance between allowing bucks to reach their maximum antler growth for the year and giving hunters a chance to harvest them before they shed their velvet. “We feel like that mid-Sept range is going to capture that range – not too early, not too late, but just about right.”
> The bill creates an early season on private land and, at the discretion of the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, on wildlife management areas. However, there won’t be an early archery season on any WMAs this year.
> …not been enough time for the department to determine how to best implement the early season on WMAs, so the department has decided to take a slow approach.
> “We want to have time to iron out any kinks in the season if there are any. We’ll monitor how this season goes and decide how we want to go about it on WMAs. We want to take our time and do it right.”
|
|
> …would set up a new Jan hunting season for deer in counties where some of the state licenses for harvesting antlerless deer were not sold. Sen. Ken Rozenboom said the bill would let deer hunters use semi-automatic rifles during that period.
> “The purpose of this season is not to hunt for sport, but rather to manage the size of the herd,” Rozenboom said, “which is why more efficient and effective firearms are being authorized.”
> Rep. Todd Prichard, a Democrat from Charles City [and a major in the U.S. Army Reserve], said it’s a dangerous idea to use AR-15s to hunt for deer. “The range that I’m familiar with this type of weapon and round is 3,400-3,600 meters. It’s about 2.5 miles…5 miles in diameter.”
Unless I’m missing something, I think they’re both off the farm. An AR is not more “efficient and effective” than any decent hunting rifle (it’s the hunter, not the weapon!), and that statement implies hunters can or should take more than 1 well-placed shot. And the miles thing is just ridiculous – with respect to him for serving, he should be embarrassed.

“First documented case of whitetail deer consuming human flesh”??? 😳
|
|
> Researchers at the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility in San Marcos, TX set up a trail camera over a decomposing human body. What they found was extraordinary.
No idea why anyone would ever do that but here’s the video:
|
|
> Currently whitetail and mule deer are just considered as “deer” when it comes to issuing WY hunting licenses…. When a hunter receives a deer license, the choice should be made whether the hunt will be for whitetail or mule deer….
> “This is something that wasn’t needed at the onset, until our whitetailed deer population has grown as robust as it has statewide.”
> By changing the current statute…this would also allow the Game and Fish Dept to manage the 2 deer populations separately and accordingly.
34 tags that allow you to hunt big game in any open hunt in the state. License not needed to enter.
> Bright spots included a 36% jump in youth deer harvests, and a late-season deer harvest increase particularly among young hunters.
> …results indicate western ND’s mule deer population is 13% higher than last year and 34% above the long-term average.
…over sportsmen? That post ^ attempts to prove it – the latest example is wildlife administrator Ken McDonald allegedly being reassigned.
> “The winters have shortened and the falls are longer, which means longer time for those ticks to quest and actively seek their host, which means (moose) have accumulated much more on them.”
> At the local Walmart, on May 19, there were about 20,000 rounds of Federal Automatch in 325 round bulk packs. At $21.16 per 325 rounds, that is 6.51 cents per round, significantly lower than this correspondent has seen for months.
> Melvin Forbes’ New Ultralight Arms (NULA) has been the leader in high quality, extremely lightweight bolt rifles since 1985…. Prior to Melvin’s NULA rifles, an accurate 5-lb rifle chambered in one of the .308 family of cartridges was considered impossible.
> Production of NULA rifles will relocate from WV to the Wilson Combat plant in NW AR in the coming months. Initial product offerings will be the Model 20S (chambered in .223 Wylde, 300 HAM’R and .350 Legend) and Model 20 (chambered in .243 Win, 6.5 CM, 7mm08 Rem, .284 Win and .308 Win).

14. 2A stuff.
Way more 2A stuff this week because in the wake of the terrible, tragic shootings 🙏✝️ it’s a full-court press for our 2A rights – which the federal government is doing all it can to pretend do not exist.
Thought this was a powerful perspective:
|
|
> As the media has become an arm of the Democrat party, trafficking in illegal votes has become easier. The local police are controlled by the people who gained power through vote trafficking – the media is unwilling to expose the people whose politics they approve of.
> The 2020 election shows the severe danger from illegal vote trafficking. An illicit and criminal administration has come to power, propped up by a media which has become the propaganda arm of the state.
> If you doubt illegal vote trafficking is a problem, see [the documentary] 2000 Mules. It removes 95% of any doubt.
> NJ Democrat Sens. Cory Booker and Bob Menendez, and CT Democrat Sen. Richard Blumenthal are behind the 11-page measure, dubbed the “Federal Firearm Licensing Act.”
> “The DOJ license would require both a written firearm safety test and hands-on training, a criminal background check and submission of fingerprints and proof of identity. The license would only be available to people over 21 years of age, essentially raising the age of gun ownership to 21.”
> “The days of when you can’t have protection are over,” said White, a mother to 2 girls. Too many unhinged “nutcases,” potentially violent people, are roaming society, she said.
15. Keep an eye on…
Obviously if the court agreed, the ramifications on hunting, livestock farming/groceries, and even owning a pet would be insane.

Deer Disease News
> …within Allegany and Washington counties…. All of Maryland’s positive samples were found within the existing Chronic Wasting Disease Management Area.
Effort was part of an $18 mil drought relief bill.
> 2,713 deer tested for CWD in 2021-22, none tested positive. DEC has tested 60,175 deer for CWD since 2002.

> The latest addition to J.P. Sauer & Sohn’s S 404 line of bolt action rifles…. As its name implies, it’s a suppressed rifle. It has an integrated silencer that almost completely encloses the barrel.
> The integral suppressor also evenly distributes its weight throughout the barrel length and at a given sound suppression level, should result in a better-balanced weapon compared to a rifle with a muzzle-attached silencer.
> The light barrel profile along with the titanium suppressor and carbon fiber stock results in an overall weight of 7.5 lbs with a 16.5″ barrel. The rifle also has a 20.5″ barrel option.
Offered in .308 Win, 8×57 IS, 9.3×62, .30-06 and .300 Win Mag:
> The standard magazine capacity for the .300 Win Mag is 2 rounds with an optional 4-round magazine available. The standard magazine capacity for the rest of the calibers is 3 rounds and there are optional extended magazines of 5 and 8 round capacities.
Does not give a MSRP – which usually means it’s $$$!

> …the mountains of northcentral PA are where he goes to recharge his soul and reconnect with old hunting friends. But when he wants to shoot a deer, he heads to the suburban neighborhoods of eastern Chester County…. “There’s way more deer there. They’re everywhere.”
> …it’s only been in recent years when he’s been able to perfect his game, thanks to rule enhancements by the PA Game Commission. …crossbows were only allowed for handicapped hunters, baiting was outlawed and using electronic ozone generators was not allowed. All are legal today….
> He got access to both places through his work building custom bathrooms and kitchens. “I’m down in that area all the time working in houses. Both places I hunt now, the owners never allowed hunting before. Then they got Lyme disease and now they want the deer gone.”
> …during any firearms season, he must wear the required amount of fluorescent orange, even if he’s carrying a bow. The orange made him visible, and early on he had trouble with a neighbor deliberately spooking deer whenever she saw Doutrich in his treestand.
> So he switched to a ground blind, which totally concealed his presence, and he positioned it so that he’s not shooting toward any houses, and so that any deer he does shoot will likely fall on the property he’s allowed to hunt.
> “You really have to exercise self control. You have to wait for the perfect shot, which means you might have to pass on shots that you could make but which might not keep the deer where you want it.”
> …Doutrich has found that if he rests a crossbow on a tripod in his blind, the movement needed to shoot at a deer is minimal….
> …for beating the noses of approaching deer, Doutrich has turned to using Ozonics – a brand of machine that generates and dispenses ozone. “It works. I’ve had deer come in straight downwind of my blind and they don’t spook. That didn’t happen before I started using Ozonics.”

|
“My initial natural reaction to taking a life was to pause, exhale and feel some sense of guilt. After I approached the downed bird and picked it up I was like overcome with a sense of euphoria.”
