New all-time typ record outta NY!
|
Few weeks back we had the NY record non-typ buck, today it’s the new #1 all-time TYP outta NY, taken by Dieter Herbert – info from OL:
> The suburban tracts of land that he hunts are generally 20 acres or less…. In Nov 2019 a giant buck with a split G4 appeared on one of his trailcams…he knew right away that it was a world-class buck and he nicknamed it “Split G4.”
> When he got to the tract where he built the ground blind, he pulled the card from the camera and to his delight saw several pictures of Split G4 just before dawn working the mock scrape. Knowing the big buck was probably bedded down in the brushy tract he backed out, went home and grabbed some lunch and his gear, then went back for an afternoon hunt.
> After being in the blind for only about 2 hours, Herbert arrowed a 130-class, 9-pointer that expired within sight of his blind. Herbert called his brother to tell him about his hunt when he heard another deer approaching through the tall CRP grass behind him. He quickly ended the phone call and waited.
> The deer finally appeared just 10 yards away. It was Split G4. Herbert was on his knees in the ground blind. The buck had its head in the air surveying the area with its nose. Once it turned its head Herbert came to full draw and stood up. The buck threw his head back in the hunter’s direction, but it was too late.
Nice afternoon hunt! Tail of the tape: 227 lbs, 10 points, 197 4/8″ – biggest NY typ since 1939! 👊 👊 |

Insane TX Pineywoods PUBLIC LAND buck!
|
TX gets dinged for lack of public hunting land and therefore public land deer – that’s why it’s real dang impressive when a hunter takes a ginormous deer from these high-pressured woods. We’ve showed this 8-point before, taken by Luke Smith, but NA Whitetail had some deets about how it went down:
> When my friend Walter and I arrived at Davy Crockett National Forest…the parking lot seemed empty as we parked and headed down towards the familiar creek bottom. Slowly tiptoeing, we’d move, then sit down and be quiet for 30 minutes. After pausing, we’d pick up and move again.
> We continued with our methodical approach until we reached a split in the creek. That’s where we decided to divide and conquer. I went left. Walter went right. I chose an old pine and settled in. About 5 minutes later, I caught sight of movement over my right shoulder.
> A mere millisecond was all I needed to conclude that this deer’s rack was of massive proportions! All at once, my 38 years of hunting experience kicked in like a second instinct.
> I rose to my right knee and shouldered my Browning lever-action .257 Roberts and delivered my first shot. The strong-willed buck took the round like a bull and went busting though the palmetto towards the safety of the briar thicket.
> Walter and I high-fived, hugged, and fist-bumped before eventually settling down to say thank you to God. Together, we prayed over the buck.
The buck measured 159 2/8 – REAL nice. Looks even bigger than that! |

Split G2, kicker AND a unicorn horn?? 🤯
|
Seen on Deercast. If that’s a unicorn horn, and he’s got two other main beams, does that make him a…tricorn??

Realtree fireworks are actually a thing.
|
Guess if there’s Realtree perfume now, this is no surprise? A few of ’em:
> Monster Bucks – You won’t believe the spread on these giant racks! Beams of silver glittering tails fork into tines of brocade crown with color glitter and blue stars. Ends in a 20-point finale of crackling willow.
> It’s a Buck/Doe – Great single-effect cakes ideal for gender reveals. Colorful breaks of blue OR pink pearls accentuated with gold glitter. 26 shots each.
> Crosshairs – Take aim with straight shots of color stars with green, gold and white glitter, brocade crown with blue, crackle, color pearls and red palms, and brocade comets to brocade crown with crackle.
The marketing never stops! Find ’em in your state (if legal) here. |

Tip of the Week
|
Field & Stream’s Richard Mann dusted off a 100+ yr-old rifle training drill developed by Stewart Edward White, a writer and outdoorsman – interesting:
> The object of the drill is to develop quick, accurate fire, the kind of shooting which will give the best results when hunting. Place the target at 100 yards. You’ll have to make your own, with an 8″ and 26″ ring. Count hits outside the 26″ ring as 0.
> The shooter starts standing with the rifle at the high ready. A shot timer is used, and on the start signal the shooter fires a single shot as precise and fast as possible. This process is repeated 4 times. After the 5 shots, total all the times and use the table below, comparing your total time to the scoring ring value for each hit. |
> For example, if your total time was 18 seconds and you had 2 hits in the 8″ ring and 3 hits in the 26″ ring, your score would be 7 + 7 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 26.
> We can easily adapt this concept to whitetail deer hunting. Cut a life-size deer silhouette out of cardboard and draw 5″, 10″ and 15″ circles over the kill zone. Place the target at 50 yards but position it so the scoring rings face away from the shooter. Then, conduct the 5-shot deer hunter drill just as detailed for the White drill, and score the target in the same manner. If you can score 50, that’s pretty darn good.
Assumes you’ve got plenty of ammo…. |
