Check out this year’s stud Muy Grande low-fence winner!

NICE buck taken by Jeremy Evans in Jim Hogg County, TX, part of the annual Muy Grande contest. @Texasbuckregistry said:
> 7.5 yr – 13 point – 191 3/8″ B&C gross – 178 2/8″ net typical.
Jeremy said:
> Watched this deer for 3 years. Decided to give him another year when he was 6.5. At 7.5 he went from 170s to low 190s. Let them grow!
Love it Jeremy, congrats dude! |

IA hunter gets 2 bucks ➡️ 341 inches!!

Jarrett Sweeney’s farm sounds like a great place to hunt! From @_monsterwhitetails_:
> First his dandy archery typical scoring an impressive 172″, followed by a gnarly heavy-horned muzzleloader tank scoring 169 5/8″.
Shooting just 1 of those deer would be great! Both = 🤯 😎 🏆 |

First time in more than 150 years.
2. AZ wants public comment on maybe new trailcam rules.
> If approved, the new regs would prohibit the use of trail cameras for the purpose of taking or aiding in the take of wildlife within 1/4 mile of a developed water source, and allow the use of trail cameras to aid in the take of wildlife from Feb 1 through Jun 30 as long as the camera is not placed within 1/4 mile of a developed water source.
Feb 1-Jun 30 = not during deer season.
3. OR will limit archery deer tags this fall due to…tech??
Says it’s due to growth in archery hunting but also:
> Another is improvements in technology, which allow hunters to make longer kill shots and archery hunters to have higher success rates.
First time we’ve heard of a game commission point at high tech (x-bows, laser sights, etc) for increased success.
4. ME has a bill that would allow Sunday hunting.
5. ID non-rez deer tags already sold out.
Earliest in recent memory. Also looks like winter muley fawn survival was good (can’t link it, at localnews8 com).
6. IA lawmaker wants more deer gone.
Says there’s too many, proposed a bill to study the herd.
7. SD makes some new deer proposals.
Commission meeting on ’em is Apr 8-9:
> …proposed the East River, West River, Black Hills, Custer State Park, Muzzleloader and Refuge Deer Hunting Seasons at their March meeting.
> At the April meeting, the Department will provide their recommended number of licenses and access permits by hunting unit for the 2021 and 2022 hunting seasons.
> The Commission also proposed 3 changes to municipal archery and archery access permits licenses.
8. WY hunt mentor programs for kids/parents and adult women.
9. DC: Biden Interior secretary grew up hunting.
10. SK asked to increase whitetail and muley limits.
Deer pops are increasing.
11. AL House passes bill for night coyote and hog hunting.
12. 2A stuff.
DC: Now the Dems want Biden to appoint a gun czar. Rumor is this teacher was nominated: |

Deer Disease News
1. SD wants ALL hunters to landfill deer carcasses.
Sounds a little extreme?
> Under the proposal, all hunters transporting a deer or elk from the county of harvest must dispose of all carcass remains in a garbage container or at a permitted landfill. This would apply statewide regardless of CWD status in the respective county.
> “Our previous rule required only those hunters in CWD endemic areas to follow this rule.”
2. LA: Scent biz group endorses new scent reg.
> …encouraging hunters to support a proposed update to LA’s deer hunting regulations that that allows the sale and use of scents…that meet the requirements of the law will begin featuring a new “DPP Checkmark” logo.
3. MI: CWD found in 1 farm deer.

New Stuff

As always, made in the US of A:
> The 590 utilizes a blade flipper for quick and easy one-hand deployment with the ASAP assisted opening technology. |
😍 Check out all Buck’s new 2021 knives here.
2. Easton lets a buncha new arrows fly.
> The new lineup includes the AXIS Long Range, 4mm FMJ, traditional Carbon Legacy, 6.5 Whiteout, and the Avancé all-carbon target shaft.
3. New Sitka Dew Point rain gear is super light.
> Weighing a mere 23 oz with no compromise in durability, this system is perfect for extended trips where every ounce and cubic inch of your pack is accounted for. |
|
4. Millennium Q200 tower stand – sorta portable?
323 lbs so pretty easy to move with a 4-wheeler. 500-lb weight capacity and multi-configurable windows: |
|
5. Nose Jammer rub-on wax stick.
> The wax sticks contain vanillin and other natural aromatic compounds to cover up human scent and “jam” an animal’s sense of smell. |

Gear of the Week

Little ironic Guns.com has a review of an x-bow, but horizontal bows have come a long way in the past few years. Here’s what they thought of Ravin’s R20:
> The R20 shoots at a zippy 430 fps with 164 lbs of kinetic energy. Most notable is the promise of 3″ bullseyes at 100 yards. A crisp 4-lb trigger pull aids with that accuracy guarantee.
> …anti-dry-fire mechanism as well as an automatic safety. Built-in sling mounts make packing the R20 to the deer stand a snap.
> …measures a compact 6″ axle-to-axle when cocked and 10.5″ uncocked. Overall length is 34.5″ and it weighs in at 7.1 lbs.
> The Ravin R20 is cocked with its included crank with a draw weight of only 12 lbs, and it’s just as easily decocked.
> …package includes 3 Ravin arrows and field tips, a quiver, and…a specialized 100-yard illuminated scope with mounts.
> We shot a best 100-yard group of just a hair over 2″ with the company’s Premium .001 carbon arrows. With the standard .003 arrows, even inexperienced shooters were surprising themselves with 3-4″ groups at the length of a football field and an occasional cross breeze.
Sounds good BUT…MSRP is $3,349.99…which would buy you a pretty sweet custom rifle! On the other other hand, you don’t need to worry about finding ammo…. |

Tip of the Week
|
If ya can’t seem to get an arrow to fly straight out of a new bow, Bill Winke at Bowhuntingmag.com says start by tweaking the travel of your nock:
> Vertical nock travel (up or down as the string zips forward) arises from poor cam-timing, the result of poor cam design or the stretch of one harness versus the other.
> I still time all of my bows whether they have single, hybrid or binary cams. You do this by twisting up the correct cable (control cable or buss cable) to ensure the cams are at the correct rotation at full draw to produce level nock travel.
> You’ll see the result of horizontal nock travel when you paper-tune your bow and find a sideways tear. Eliminating that tear will require a process of elimination, as sideways nock travel can result from 2 different issues.
> See if the cams are vertical at full draw. It’s harder to see this when you’re drawing the bow, so get someone to draw the bow while you look at it from above. If misalignment is noticeable, you’ll have a hard time tuning that bow.
> You can sometimes fix a bit of cam lean by twisting one side of the bow’s split-yoke system (if applicable) to move the limb tips back to square.
Then there’s your grip:
> Finally I realized I could change the arrow flight by just bending my wrist differently or adjusting my pressure point on the bow’s handle. I started experimenting with my grip and was soon able to get good arrow flight out of bows that otherwise gave me fits. However, it often took a slightly different grip to suit each bow.
So if you love that bow and you’ve tweaked and tuned it but it still ain’t shooting right, guess you need to be willing to change your grip…which maybe is easier than it sounds? |

Quote of the Week

“…we haven’t destroyed deer’s habitat, we’ve perfected it.”
– Talkin’ about suburban deer habitat, in this case Philadelphia, PA. More:
> “There’s very little in the way of natural predators…we’ve also taken out other limiting factors, like starvation.”
Gotta be some truly huge, ultra-healthy deer in the suburbs…. |
