B&C says the Huff buck is the #2 World Record typ!
|
|
> Dustin Huff’s immense typical whitetail, taken by crossbow in Decatur County, IN on Nov 4, 2021, will be accepted into the B&C Club’s Big Game Records at a net entry score of 211 4/8.
> …Huff’s IN giant stands to be recognized as the top-scoring typical ever documented from the US.
But:
> Because the mandatory 60-day drying period for the rack had not ended as of Dec 31, 2021, the deer is not eligible for panel measuring until 2025, following B&C’s 32nd Big Game Awards Period (for entries received in 2022-4).
Not sure why that is but there must be a reason!

Will the 2022 season be EPIC because of the moon? 🤔
|
|
> What is the big deal about 19-year spans? The significance is that the moon follows a 19-year cycle so that every 19 years the moon is full on the same date as well as all the other phases identically duplicating the prior sequence, leading up and following.
> There is a name for this astronomical phenomenon: the Metonic cycle or Enneadecaeteris (Greek for 19.)
> Whitetails [show] parallel behavior every 19 years too, since their biorhythms are tuned by photoperiodic light…. The conclusion that whitetail breeding rhythms mirror the Metonic cycle lines up with my Excel spreadsheet, a synopsis timeline chronicling anecdotal whitetail behavior and kills and observations through each rut since the 1970s from myself and others.
Supposedly this will also supercharge the rut:
> This upcoming season will unfold a ‘classic rut,’ finally, after a few seasons of 2-pronged ruts. What is a classic rut compared to others?
> Some years breeding peaks, or high points of intensity, are spread out in waves with doe coming into estrus usually about 3 weeks apart. We have developed names for these less than stellar ruts, such as a ‘2-pronged rut,’ a ‘trickle rut,’ or even a ‘non-existent rut.’ But once in a while we get a great, intense rut. And this year will be one….
All we can say is:
– Hope so!
– Might be the year to take that once in a lifetime trip?

Vincent Clark’s 23-point NC stud finally got scored and…
|
|
…spoiler alert: it’s huge!
|
|
> The 4×4 frame has 15 measurable non-typical points, including a long and distinctive drop tine. Scored officially as a non-typical deer, its 23 points measured 203 0/8″.
> It falls a little more than 25″ short of the all-time state record. …will go down as the 5th-biggest non-typical whitetail taken in NC….

New Spypoint Flex trailcams sound pretty amazing…
|
|
> “It’s the only cellular trail camera that offers multiple SIM cards pre-installed and pre-activated. No calls with customer service to switch SIM cards, no manually switching. The camera is automatically going to connect the best, most reliable network.
> “That’s huge for our customers for a couple reasons. First, no more worrying about which carrier model to select when buying their camera. That’s obvious. But then once it is in the field, knowing that if something happens to that preferred network, that the camera will still be able to try to connect to other available carriers is huge. Frankly, it’s overlooked.
> “Right now, people are just excited to see dual SIM and no worrying about carrier models. In reality, the way we are deploying that, with the multi-carrier autoconnectivity, that’s the real benefit. The camera is doing this automatically. The reliability that offers is huge.”

1. IL Deer Classic show is THIS WEEKEND.
Peoria Civic Center. Can’t link it, at: illinoisdeerclassic com
> …376,810 whitetail deer. The statewide buck harvest was estimated at 145,320 and the antlerless harvest at 231,490.
> …down about 13% compared to 2020-21, when hunters recorded the largest deer harvest in 16 years…. It is, however, similar to the estimated statewide deer harvests during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
> The DWR’s management plan for deer sets the deer population goal at 400,000, but the DWR said the current population is 305,700. “We’ve had several years of drought and are still facing ongoing extreme drought conditions in the state….”
Legislature had a hearing on a bill.
> …scope cameras…attach to their rifles, providing an external view of where the firearm is aimed. A companion is then able to guide the visually impaired hunter to their target.
> “These fine, precision-made guns might otherwise be torn apart and melted down because of modern German gun restrictions.”
Sells ’em too. Check out the website here, can’t link it: german-gun-imports com
Cool idea:
> BOWdometer is an archery practice companion that attached to your bow and gives instant feedback about your shots without changing how you practice.
> The BOWdometer Achievement Challenge will run through the month of Apr on Instagram. Participants will earn achievement badges…to celebrate achievements in practice sessions, shot counts, consistency and more. Once all 4 core badges are earned, they are entered to win an exclusive prize pack from BOWdometer and JVD Archery.
11. 2A stuff.
12. Keep an eye on….
> The study found that cases of recent lead poisoning rise in winter, when eagles are most likely to be feeding on contaminated deer carcasses and gut piles.
> Other studies show similar correlations and older research…found that hunters’ discarded carcasses often contained lead fragments….
> In addition, wildlife rehabilitation centers with X-ray machines have been able to show that when eagles have high lead levels, they often also have lead fragments in their digestive systems.
> “When you start piecing all of that together, there are very strong correlations suggesting that this is the pathway whereby eagles are lead-poisoned.”
Is this what’s behind the whole “deer can carry covid” effort?
> Their hope is to reduce infectious disease transmission among wild animals, thereby lowering the risk that harmful viruses and bacteria can jump from wildlife to humans as many experts believe happened with SARS-CoV-2….
Not a single actual expert has said they believe that happened btw.
Because:
> The bridge will give big cats, coyotes, deer, lizards, snakes and other creatures a safe route to open space in the Santa Monica Mountains and better access to food and potential mates, said the wildlife federation’s Beth Pratt.
$90 mil for maybe 10 snakes, lizards and whatnot that would die there every year. CA is something else….
If it works, maybe it could be a good idea for deer in some states.

> This company’s rifles aren’t inexpensive, but the Hunter Elite model was designed from the ground up to be available at a lower price point…. The Hunter Elite isn’t just a rifle – it is a turnkey range-ready package.
> The rifle comes with a pre-mounted Huskemaw Optics Blue Diamond long-range optic with a ballistic turret calibrated to a specific load. 20 rounds of that load are included
> …available in 5 cartridges ranging from the 6.5 CM…to magnums, including the .28 Nosler and .300 Win Mag.
> The Hunter Elite uses an internal 700-style steel magazine that holds 3 rounds in the 6.5 CM chambering. A hinged aluminum floorplate allows shooters to quickly unload the rifle and provides a more trim appearance….
> A single-stage Timney trigger…was set to break cleanly right at 2 lbs. The safety is a traditional 700-style lever that rides on the starboard side of the tang.
> I tested each of the loads with 3 3-shot groups at 100 yards. The average across all of those groups was a mere 0.46″.
Base price is a hefty $5,499, $6,098 as tested.

> Loosened Screws: As ridiculous as it might sound, your accuracy woes could be the result of loosened screws. Even with the use of a mild thread-locking compound, screws can loosen as the result of recoil, and transport in the vehicle and afield. Unless your rifle has taken a hard blow, a shift in zero is an indicator that something has loosened.
> Use a Trusted Scope: If you’ve done the abovementioned procedure and accuracy is still inconsistent, then it’s reasonable to question the scope. Scopes often get falsely blamed for inaccuracy, but they can and do “give up the ghost” occasionally. Try removing the questionable optic and replacing it with a trusted unit.
> Do a Deep Cleaning: A change in accuracy can usually be remedied with a deep cleaning. To remove stubborn fouling, you’ll want to use a solvent capable of cutting the crud teamed with patches and brushes.
> Change Ammunition: …if the above steps haven’t brought back the accuracy, and especially if you’re using a high-intensity cartridge…the throat (or leade) very well could have been lengthened through continuous shooting. If you’re a non-handloader, you might have to experiment with a range of lead-core and leadless loads in varying weights and profiles to find the new, just-right combination.
> Stock Work: Is there any back-and-forth or side-to-side movement of the barreled action in the stock? If there is, your rifle could benefit from a glass-bedding job. Why? Movement of the barreled action in the stock affects shot-to-shot consistency, and consistency is accuracy.
> Recrown: Most rifles have a barrel crown that protect the rifling from accuracy-robbing nicks, dents and gouges during time afield, or when situated barrel-down in a bouncing truck. But at times damage can still occur, and accuracy will be affected.

It is nearly impossible to get a carry permit in parts of CA, NY, MA, NJ and in MD. Cities like Los Angeles, New York City, Springfield, Camden and Baltimore are some of our most violent cities. If disarming honest citizens made us safer then we should see the results…. What do you see?
