Brothers use GPS maps to zero in on a KS public land giant!
|
|
David and H.J. Ramey are from GA, but every fall they go to KS to chase big bucks on public land. ๐ With a mapping app they found a 300-acre funnel between ag fields that surrounded by food, water, and thick CRP cover. Score! Told their story to Buckmasters:
> …spent opening day of the Sept 14-27 season at a WMA with which they were already familiar. Experience had taught them the place received almost no pressure that early in the year, when the temperature can reach 100 degrees.
> 30 minutes into the early-season muzzleloader hunt, David heard a deer approaching…the buck was only 50 yards from his ladder stand…the deer was far bigger than the 150″ KS 10-pointer he’d taken during a previous season.
> “When H.J. and I put up the ladder, we cut a small shooting lane about 10 yards from my stand to allow me to shoot toward either of 2 intersecting trails. When the buck stepped into that lane, it lifted his head and looked right at me. I don’t usually take head-on shots, but this buck was so close that I figured I might not get a better angle.” …centered his crosshairs on the animal’s beefy chest and squeezed the trigger.
> “Very few hunters take advantage of this blackpowder season, when the temperature is usually between 80 and 100 degrees. The bugs are awful, too. H.J. and I quickly learned the importance of using a Thermacell.”
> The toad dropped 40 yards from where David pulled the trigger. He scored 206 2/8.
NICE one dude! Love the public land heat hunting โ the giants still walk around at those times!

Another muley BEAST falls!
|

Congrats to @ben_sandall on this complete beast of a mule deer, which he arrowed using an over-the-counter AZ tag. Posted by @bowhunterplanet:
> Heavy heavy muley brother and well deserved โ like we always say, you get out what you put in and this guy puts in the dedication! Big congrats Ben and thank you for sharing.
Sounds like Ben got it on video โ might want to hit his YT channel at some point…that hunt wasn’t up there yet when we checked….

Couple trophy velvets! But… roadkill. ๐

Hate to see these magnificent deer go down right before the season starts, but real nice deer all the same. The one on the left is a wiiiiiiie old buck that measured 186″, shared by @whitetailheaven’s IG.

> First start with electrical tape and go right around the base of the antlers, and pull it super tight to keep the paint from getting on the horns. You can put Gorilla tape up higher.
> …put a base color on the skull…whatever color you want…doesn’t have to be covered perfectly. Then let it dry.
> Pick 3 colors of enamel (oil) spray paint. Fill up a big plastic tote with water, and start by spraying the base color into the water. Alternate with your other two colors, and maybe do 10 different layers. Then, with a stick or spoon, gently swirl the colors around.
> Very slowly dip your skull into the paint/water mix until it’s completely submerged, up to the bases of the antlers. Sometimes you have to chase the paint around.
> Take a rag and pull any excess paint away from the skull. ….you can quickly remove the skull and shake off any excess water. Allow to thoroughly dry. …finish it with a clear coat if you want.
Looks pretty good! (If that’s your thing.) Totally gonna try it.

Can we go back to college??
|
|
Or at least one of these schools? First, check this out โ South Dakota State U:
|
|
Another Redditor u/danaozideshihou said his alma mater โ MN’s Bemidji State โ has a game-cleaning room and weapon storage lockers: ๐คฏ
|
|
> Weapons storage lockers are located in a secure room in Walnut Hall. Lockers may be reserved at the Housing & Residential Life office in Walnut Hall at no charge. Residents must sign an agreement and will receive a key for the locker.
> A room for the cleaning of wild fish and game is located in Walnut Hall. The room has stainless cleaning tables, sink/sprayer and more.
How great is that! Maybe there’s still hope for some universities….

Aug 28 at the Milford Project Office โ archery only:
> Registration for the drawing will begin at 8 am and the drawing will be held at 9:30 am.
Right around the corner!
> The OH Landowner and Hunter Access Partnership provides an economic incentive โ $2 to $30 per acre annual payment โ to landowners granting access.
Great to hear. Post says he was getting setup for the season. Be careful out there folks!
Not good:
> Park rangers said that the animals have learned how to “open coolers and trash bags.”
Part of the stomach contents:

> This “mega” guzzler is 15 times the size of a traditional one, and includes a 7,200 sq ft apron that drains into 5 storage tanks. It can take about 6″ of precipitation to fill a traditional style guzzler โ for the mega guzzler, it only takes 2″.

> …funds to support local projects that strengthen WTU’s mission.
Russia is a big source of target-grade ammo for popular hunting calibers like .308 and 7.62×39. Likely to hurt US gun owners more than Russian oligarchs. Coincidence??
Understand, hate to hear it. Gotta end!
> …provides comprehensive solutions to address the rapidly declining health of American forests and prevent catastrophic wildfires….
Believe it’s CO only.
18. 2a stuff.
19. Keep your eyes on….
These groups are and will be pushing across the country because they feel they have the folks in power to do this. They might be right but we can still fight back!

Deer Disease News
> …will be more deer permit areas added to disease zones after CWD was detected in wild and farmed deer in more parts of the state over the past year.
> …DNR says during opening weekends of firearms A and B seasons (Nov 6-7 and Nov 20-21), any deer that’s a year or older that’s hunted from a deer permit area (DPA) in one of the CWD zones must be submitted for testing.
Still nothing that says people can get CWD from it or anything else….
> EHD outbreaks typically begin in late summer. Symptoms in deer may include difficulty standing, drooling, and emitting foam from the mouth or nose. Since the disease causes a fever, sick or dead deer are often seen in or

Pop-up blinds are great for their portability, but you probably know that if you leave them out in the elements, they typically start falling apart by the time the season is over. Cage Blinds says they’ve solved that issues with their new pop-up:
> The CAGE Permanent Hub Blind pops up like a typical hub blind and then utilizes additional aluminum spreader poles that connect to metal hubs in each corner. The roof is supported by four aluminum Pogo Poles that lock in place with an easy-to-use threaded lock hub.
> Together the spreader poles, corner hubs and the locked-in roof structure form a 3D rigid truss capable of supporting an excess of 800 lbs. The metal frame and roof of the CAGE Permanent Hub Blind will hold up to strong winds and the heaviest of snow loads.
> All-Weather Fabric is a bonded 3-layer material designed to withstand a constant barrage of wind and rain without failure. The exterior is made with heavy-duty solution dyed polyester which creates a more colorfast material that looks great for years.
> The interior fabric is black which maximizes concealment making the CAGE Permanent Hub Blind exceptionally dark. Inbetween the 2 fabrics is a waterproof/windproof membrane that will continue to keep out the elements even after years of rough use.

> Get quiet gear. “Wool’s my favorite. Polar fleece is good too. They’re your only quiet choices for stalking. Everything else sounds like sandpaper when it brushes against vegetation.”
> Deer and hunters each expect the other to be standing erect and making noise when moving through the woods, yet most hunters have seen deer get down on their bellies to slide under fences and to avoid hunters in low cover. They routinely fool us by not acting the way we expect them to. We can do the same.
> “Streams tend to be low and out of eyesight, particularly of a bedded deer. You leave no scent underfoot and the water is superb at covering the noise of your movement. The key to moving quietly is to never lift your feet out of the water. Deer, in my experience, simply don’t associate streams with humans.
> “My personal rule of thumb is to stalk for 2 minutes at a time, and then pause for 5. I might move 5 yards in those 2 minutes or as much as 40. It all depends on the terrain.” He never crosses a beam of sunlight if there’s a way around it. To muffle noise he tries to time his movements with increases in wind volume.
> “I don’t understand guys who slam doors, talk loudly, and then think they can start hunting. My stalk begins when I turn the truck engine off.” He shuts the truck door softly, loads the rifle quietly, and keeps conversation with his hunting companions to a whisper.

“It’s very similar to sitting on a motorcycle.”
> “You can play the tree for cover”…keeping the tree between the hunter and the deer.
