That buck gave Jeffrey Stamper the slip last season but this year Jeff put him down on opening day! 👊 Told Realtree the story:
> With the season set to open on Saturday, Sept 4, Stamper checked his camera one last time…. The buck had been back the day before, then again on Friday morning. With rain in the area bringing cooler temps, Stamper felt like opening day might give him his best shot at killing the deer.
> “This year, I decided to try something different by putting out a ground blind early, so the deer had time to get used to it.”
> As shooting light drew to a close…a noise or a movement alerted Stamper to the buck, and he was coming straight to the corn. “For whatever reason, the buck didn’t wind me. He came straight in like he owned the place.
> “He walked right in and stopped at 16 yards, slightly quartering away. There was just enough light left in the blind to see my pin. I drew, aimed and released the arrow before I could even think about it.
> “I found the arrow about 20 yards up the trail. It had a little bit of blood and a hunk of meat on it. I looked for blood on the trail the deer had taken but didn’t see any. That’s when I started to get nervous and decided to back out and call my dad and a buddy with a tracking dog for extra help.”
It ended up that the shot was good:
> “…it went in about midway back on the side closest to me and…took out both lungs, but the deer just didn’t bleed much. Without the dog, it would have been hard to find my buck in the dark. We would have probably had to leave it overnight.”
The buck scored just shy of 160.

👀 Check out IN’s all-time bow non-typ – shot last fall!!!
|

NA Whitetail got the story from Rex Millspaugh, who in Oct 2020 shot IN’s all-time archery non-typ – clocked in at an amazing 259 2/8!!! 🤯 🤯
> Prior to the 2020 season, Rex decided to put up a sweet-corn patch around a strategically placed clover food plot on the family property. But in all his off-season chores, Rex never laid eyes on the buck.
> Then in late July everything changed. The monster finally showed on one of the trail cameras, and he was now bigger than life. That’s when Rex got serious about chasing this deer.
> So, on Oct 25 Rex arrived at his stand around 3:30 pm. “It was a slow hunt, and I was beginning to get bored when I decided to look over my left shoulder towards our fencerow – and there he was. He was walking along the edge of our bean field about 50 yards away.
> “I let him get in front of the big branch on the oak tree I was hanging in, to where he couldn’t see me, and I drew back.” The buck was a mere 7 or 8 yards from the base of the tree when Millspaugh let out a soft grunt.”
The deer took off and then went down:
> The Millspaugh Buck truly has a bit of everything you feel a record non-typical whitetail would or should have. One of the first things that catches the eye is this buck’s classic and beautifully symmetrical (on the typical frame) lines, and its antlers are a combination of multi-shaded mahogany colors.
> The main beams feature a semi-bladed shape that is just as unique. They are 29″ on the right and 28 5/8″ on the left. The circumference measurements are nearly identical side to side, and the H-2 through H-4 measurements average right at 5″ each.
> The G-2 and G-3 tines on the right side are 12 3/8 and 10 5/8 respectively. They start forward a bit, but then abruptly turn back toward the buck’s back, finally curling inward at the tips. Most of the tines feature the same semi-blading.
Amazing! Rex’s buck beat Tim Jungblut’s 246 5/8″ monster shot in Hamilton County back in 2011. For some reason no pics of that deer exist on the web, so here’s a trailcam pic of Rex’s deer:

Is the Lancehead F1 x-bow the start of something new? 🧐
|
|
Is a crossbow not a crossbow if it’s not shaped like a cross?? 🤔
|
|
> …generates remarkable power using little space…store more power in less space than any conventional crossbow.
> …smooth power with relative low poundage and a longer power stroke than any conventional crossbow. Most [x-bows] rely on high poundage and short power strokes to drive speed, creating vibration and reducing accuracy.
> Torsion Drive micro limbs are made of coated carbon steel, making them tougher and more durable than any conventional crossbow limbs. Paired with the cam and pulley system, the entire system is designed to maintain balance and timing for accuracy that lasts. …U-Tune integrated maintenance system allows you to replace strings and cables, as well as fine-tune almost anywhere.
> Unlike the majority of modern-day crossbows which rely on brittle and heat-sensitive laminations of composite limb material, Lancehead uses ultra-tough ductile steel. It is sealed in a military-grade corrosion protectant, enabling an extremely high heat tolerance.
That interesting or what? Arrow speed is 360-370 fps, plenty to get the job done. BUT…MSRP is $2,500. Spendy but typical for super-premium x-bows.

After seeing that buck in June, Tara Jackson was all about it. Ravin x-bow, shot over it the first time but the deer came back so looks like it was meant to happen:

At the Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Just published in the regs so now it’s official.
As good or better than last year.
> Access permits will be issued for 3 separate 1-week hunt periods in Oct for parties of 1 or 2 hunters…. Only archery equipment or shotguns with solid, non-lead slugs may be used.
Online questionnaire. Kinda good because biologists can’t see it all….
> …canceled a Sept meeting after a top [DNR] official told him no one from the agency would participate amid a partisan fight over whether he should leave his post.
> Fred Prehn, an appointee of former Republican Gov. Scott Walker, has refused to step down even though his term expired in May. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers appointed Sandra Naas to replace him, a move that would give Evers appointees majority control of the board. Prehn maintains he doesn’t have to leave until the state Senate confirms Naas. Republicans who control that chamber have made no moves toward a confirmation vote.
Anyone know anything about Surge? Can’t find anything on ’em.
> “This acquisition is part of SCI’s strategic plan to enhance its ability to help protect the freedom to hunt worldwide. This expansion seeks to strengthen SCI’s advocacy for hunters while also defeating efforts by anti-hunters to deny everyone the freedom to hunt,” said SCI CEO W. Laird Hamberlin.
> Russia is, or was, without question, the #1 source of ammo imports for the US. The hit to the market is going to be massive. Other countries will step up to fill the gap. After all, demand is still sky-high.
CavCom is an industrial hearing protection company.
16. 2A stuff.
Sounds good but the Biden Admin is considering a “gun czar” that allegedly could make policy without any Congressional oversight. For a while now, “policy” and “regulations” are treated as laws…not good!
17. Keep an eye on….
Remember in OR there’s a ballot initiative even worse than that!

Sick of roughin’ it in the deer woods? Big deer road trip planned? Got a spare $90K?? Then you might wanna check out Outside Van. An uber-premium huntin’ camper set on a Mercedes Sprinter 4×4 chassis. Ballisticmag.com had the deets:
> …has adjustable seating, to allow for 2-4…captain’s chairs. …if you are only traveling with 2, you can remove the premium bench seat for more interior room.
> …the custom galley kitchen is perfect for whipping up a meal. It features a flush-mounted induction cooktop next to the premium sink. The sink and cooktop sit above a dual-zone refrigeration with adjustable temperature control.
> …the rear of the van transforms into a lounge area with 2 dinette leather-bound couches. However, when it is time to settle in for the night, the Altitude Bed converts this space into sleeping quarters.
> When I first saw the Outside Van Launch Pad, I thought it was pretty cool. But when I saw the hammock stand on the roof, I knew I had to share it with you. The roof also contains three 45w Zamp Obsidian Series ultra-low profile solar panels. During the day the panels charge the lithium battery, featuring 630 amp hours and 8,064 watt hours. The 2,000w inverter ensures that your gear receives clean and reliable electricity….
Pretty cool! And we bet someone could take those ideas and make something similar for less….

> The best description I’ve heard for a hunting saddle is that it’s a cross between a rock-climbing harness and a hammock. It you’ve never seen a rock-climbing harness, it has a belt that goes around your waist as well as one for each of your legs, similar to the bottom half of a treestand safety harness.
> On a saddle, though, there is a fabric mini-hammock of sorts sewn onto the seat to support your bottom while you hang in the tree. On the front of the saddle there is a rope called the bridge that gets clipped into your tether rope to secure you to the tree.
> You will need 2 different ropes for saddle hunting. The first is your lineman’s rope, which is a large rope with a prusik knot and a carabiner attached to one end of the rope and and another to the prusik knot. This rope goes around the tree and attaches to each side of your saddle to keep you attached to the tree.
> The second rope is called your tether and looks very similar to the lineman’s rope. It also has a prusik knot with a carabiner, but instead of a second carabiner on the end of the rope it has a large loop for running the rope back through itself after wrapping it around a tree, similar to safety ropes. This rope is used once you reach hunting height to secure yourself to the tree.
> Once you reach hunting height in your saddle, you need someplace to rest your feet. For most people, that is on a commercially available platform, similar to a really small hang-on stand without a seat.
> The last thing you need to saddle hunt is a way up the tree. …numerous options available for this, but most hunters use climbing sticks…. You could also use screw-in steps where legal, or strap-on steps….
